Stolen from a comment by u/mightyshiba on another thread:

For anyone else curious apparently he lived: According to the City of Austin's Vision Zero traffic incident map, it looks like this incident occurred on April 19th, 2022. According to the map, the pedestrian survived with serious injuries. It gives an accident ID number in the report, but from what I can tell, APD won't release any info unless you're a party to the accident.

u/SampSimps 9d ago

I appreciate the link - I'm feeling better that I didn't just watch someone die.

But boy, what a fucking idiot the jaywalker is.

u/kylegetsspam 8d ago edited 8d ago

I've heard this called the "suicide gap" for a reason. It's usually in reference to cars, but the idea is the same.

Someone perpendicular to the street is let cross by stopped cars being "nice". It's only nice in theory, though, because the crosser can't see into that last lane -- and the wavers usually don't (or never) consider the implications of waving someone into a lane they're not actually in.

It's silly that it needs to be said, but don't drive (or run!) into shit you can't see. If someone's waving you through, dismiss the wave and know that you quite possibly just saved yourself a lot of hassle.

And if you're someone who does this kind of waving, quit that shit. Let people in front of you, sure, but don't wave someone across the suicide gap!

That same bit of road apparently has killed 5 other people in 2022, it looks like the narrowest and most direct path from the crosswalk on the other side.

Seems like a design failure.

139

u/ExoticEfficiency4179 8d ago

This is right near Barton Springs which is a super high traffic area and fwiw there's a crosswalk. Like half a block up with a light. That said yes Texas is not built for pedestrians in any way shape or form even Austin which is the most built for pedestrians is just awful still.

Getting hit by a 4,000 lb weight going 30/40 mph will put a ton of energy into an object. That object will take a long while to slow down. RIP

u/Affectionate_Star_43 8d ago edited 8d ago

I got hit halfway through a crosswalk by a car that was making a right turn on red...I went FLYING. He wasn't even going fast. Car vs human is no contest.

Just adding an edit to give a huge thanks to the EMT who was coming home from a 12 hour shift and pulled over to pick me off the off the road. I have no idea who you were, mystery stranger, but I'm okay now.

124

u/UberN00b719 8d ago

I was on my way home from work. Had the green light walking across the street when I got hit. Lady wasn't paying attention. I flew about 10 feet down the road. Amazingly enough, my headphones acted like a helmet so to speak and absorbed nearly all the impact from my head hitting the pavement (RIP Skullcandy headphones).

The hilariously ironic part? The lady that hit me was an ER nurse on her way to her night shift at the hospital a couple of blocks away. I spent more time consoling her than fully taking stock of my own health.

I eventually got checked out. Was given a clean bill despite being a little banged up. Things would have been worse had my headphones not taken the brunt of the impact.

u/ThrowAway233223 8d ago

She wanted to make sure she had work to do when she arrived but didn't expect to hit someone that would eat the hit like a tank.

In the UK, Jaywalking is the norm, and people normally very aware of their surroundings.

Some just walk slowly on purpose, so as drivers we have to account for such situations.

29

u/stuaxe 9d ago edited 9d ago

I just don't get it... why is such a universal concept; crossing a street where you need to cross such a novel concept in the US.

This situation is common in the UK - snarled up traffic is crawling along at a snail's pace; so make eye contact with the driver of the car you want to step in front of, gesture with your hand, and walk steadily forward.

You DO NOT need to rush and you do not need to take a step further if you don't feel safe at any point. It's fine to momentarily stop to check a car isn't coming rapidly down the next lane... rushing as if it 'actually matters' how fast the car you're crossing in front of gets to drive all of 5 meters before having to stop in traffic again, is the mistake that leads to accidents.

I've seen 2 ppl get struck before because a person was looking at her phone. I did a long honk trying to warn all the parties and they got sent flying. She was doing about 60. It's a sound I'll never forget.

53

u/dxrey65 9d ago

As a cyclist, where I have to cross two or four lane roads, the worst thing is when one person stops and waves you to cross. Like there's more lanes of traffic, I'm not stupid. I just wave them on myself and look the other way, not going to cross in front of traffic. The best way to not get hit is to never be in front of a car.

The main bike path in our town is a converted old rail line that's been paved. It's road crossings are uncontrolled, cars have the right of way so bikes just wait. But still sometimes drivers will stop and wave you into traffic; it's kind of stupid.

Yes. But this is also a good example of where the truck driver wasn't wrong but a little more defensive driving could have made this less bad.

A good defensive driving move is not to have too big of a ratio between your speed and the the speed of the vehicles in the next lane over. Especially when you see the column move ahead but not further back. It indicates something is going on.

This truck is just flying compared to the other vehicles... and likely much faster than the 35 mph roads of this type are usually limited too.

He may have still hit the dude but it wouldn't have been nearly as bad.

Defensive driving saves more lives than just your own.

292

u/bpaulauskas 9d ago

100%. How do people not get insanely nervous when your speed is that much different than lanes next to you.

Defensive driving absolutely can save lives and I love people sharing it!

68

u/NaughtyGaymer 8d ago

Right? I'm always nervous some idiot is going to get impatient with their lane and just pull out without looking so I always slow down.

13

Plus, you look like a douche trying to jump a line when you may just be aiming to do a proper zipper merge or turning a different way

336

u/r0b0c0d 9d ago

I'm impressed that you're getting upvoted for a pro-defensive driving post. Then again I guess this isn't the dashcam subreddit.

108

u/desolateconstruct 9d ago

I wrecked my car junior year of high school. Driving home from a friends, I pulled out into an intersection and couldn't get through before a car (I thought for sure I could beat through the intersection) hit my back passenger door and sent my car spinning through the intersection.

Totally my fault. I took diversion and went to STOP class. The defensive driving tips I learned in that class, I still use to this day. Watching this, in situations where there are tons of cars stacked up in other lanes, I get nervous and slow down. I figure someone will pull out of the line and cut me off, so I just slow down a bit to account for the potential. Hope the driver gets some therapy or help if they need it. That would definitely fuck me up.

32

u/LePoisson 9d ago

Lol that subreddit is madness. It's a weird mix. You have people blaming the driver when it wasn't their fault or they failed to have superhuman reflexes. On the other hand you have people driving like idiots getting into easily avoidable accidents because they were "right" by the letter of the law and people get butthurt when someone suggests defensive driving could have avoided the accident altogether.

It's very odd to me. The comment you replied to is spot on about flying past other cars though, especially in heavier traffic it can be dangerous.

Good chance that truck might have hit someone turning out of a parking lot if they were going over the speed limit and not paying attention. Sometimes it's hard to judge the speed of approaching vehicles. It's unnerving the number of times I've had to brake myself just to not t bone or rear end someone pulling out and not pressing their foot on the gas. That's with me going the speed limit or not much over.

12

u/booger_dick 9d ago

This was in Austin, and if I’m not mistaken you are not supposed to go more than 20mph faster than the lane you’re driving next to in Texas. Ie, if they’re stopped, you can’t go over 20 even if the speed limit here is 35.

→ More replies

45

u/HanakusoDays 9d ago

Big speed differentials between adjacent lanes demand serious attention. I always exercise great care if I'm in the faster lane.

84

u/KypAstar 9d ago

This is what people don't fucking get.

Defensive driving is learning to drive under the assumption that functionally no one is going to do what they should, so you drive predictable and with consideration for what could go wrong.

Its why that truck driving into a tunnel that killed the wedding party was a massive idiot, despite the stupidity of the wedding party themselves. He was on a blind curve with a massive load going at full speed. Within the speed limit? Sure. But imagine if a car had broken down and it wasn't just a bunch of selfish chodes. Suddenly everyone would see that he clearly made a poor decision.

Just because you're technically in the right, or its legal to do doesn't mean its smart, safe, or defensive.

Genuine question here. Isn't it possible that he got some broken bones, a concussion and some extremely bad road rash? Surely there's a chance he is ok after a few months, no? The hit was bad but I don't automatically assume death or permanent damage. Am I wrong?

43

u/D-Rictus 9d ago

The human body is remarkably resilient and remarkably fragile. A hit like that mostly kills but he could be the lucky SOB who gets off with broken bones and road rash. That one in a million. I doubt it but it's not unheard of. Unfortunately he got hit by Tundra and the front grill is squared off and flat so that was a full energy hit there was nothing else to absorb the energy except his body.

I suffered a compound fracture to my two lower right leg bones, some deep cuts on my face that took so many stitches the surgeon didn't bother to count, and road rash from my neck to my ass on half my back. I was playing tackle football 9 months later and doing pretty good 34 years later. It helps to be young and it was a car from the '80s not a towering pickup grill from this decade though.

According to a different Reddit post, he survived with serious injuries. Trying to find a follow up

u/galspanic 9d ago Starry

Based on this, he survived., but it looks like there were 5 fatal accidents on that road in 2022.

Living to regret his decisions, that's tough.

Not to be morbid but he might not have the mental capacity to be regretting anything at this point, alive or not

Approx 200 feet closer to the cross walk he should have used

Little did he know, he was headed that way anyways. Should have just walked the few extra feet.

it takes a normal passenger car about 300 feet to stop from 65mph. White lines are 10 feet long and spaced 30 feet apart. We can determine the pickup traveled 90 feet from tire screeching to stop. The roads appear to be dry. Based on this and my bachelor of science degree, I can confidently say that I do not know how fast the truck was going.

Easy method

Formula: Remove the last digit in the speed, multiply by the reaction time and then by 3.

Example of calculation with a speed of 50 km/h and a reaction time of 1 second:

50 km/h ⇒ 5 5 * 1 * 3 = 15 metres reaction distance

More precise method

Formula: d = (s * r) / 3.6

d = reaction distance in metres (to be calculated). s = speed in km/h. r = reaction time in seconds. 3.6 = fixed figure for converting km/h to m/s.

Example of calculation with a speed of 50 km/h and a reaction time of 1 second:

(50 * 1) / 3.6 = 13.9 metres reaction distance

I live in America. We don’t use km. Will you please redo the formula using mph? Thank you.

46

u/mces97 9d ago

1 kilometer per hour (kph) = 0.621371192 miles per hour (mph).

u/Wolframbeta312 9d ago

Sir, he said he was American. He’s far too lazy to plug that conversion into EVERYTHING in your prior comment.

Getting hit by a car at 30mph feels like falling from a 3-story building. No idea why they told us that in school, and I remembered lol

poor driver is now traumatized

1.6k

u/ObeseBumblebee 9d ago

This is why as a driver, if you're passing a line of stopped traffic you do not go the speed limit. Literally anything could pop out of that line of cars. Take it slow.

Not saying its the drivers fault because obviously it wasn't. But if you want to avoid being traumatized or wrecking your car it's a good idea.

u/RevoltingSlug 9d ago

This 100% way too many accidents are caused by cars slowed or stopped and one lane over you have people SPEEDING GOING 100mph super preventable

102

u/HCSOThrowaway 9d ago

Most people drive under the assumption that other humans will be predictable.

This is one of the deadliest factors in crashes.

44

u/PageFault 9d ago

Yea, the most dangerous thing you can do on the road is be unpredictable.

Fuck people who stop in the middle of the road to let me cross from a side-road. Fuck you dude. Quit trying to be nice and just go. I'll get in behind you when it's safe.

I've nearly been t-boned because someone was nice. Never again. I will sit there and let them hold up traffic like an asshole before I do that again.

u/HCSOThrowaway 9d ago

I just stare at them until they make angry gestures at me and proceed.

It happened a lot more back when I was driving my patrol car.

While I agree you should be driving slower in that open lane with stopped traffic next to you. Dumbasses in the stopped lane who pull into oncoming traffic without looking drive me insane. I spend quite a bit of time on the road and the number of people who switch lanes and shit without even looking is insane.

I pretty much t-boned some dude that way. I was going like 40ish and some dude going 0 jumped a solid double white line into my lane like directly in front of my car. Following conversation happened while speaking to the state trooper.

Dumbass driver: officer this guy hit me

Me: you crossed a double white line directly in front of my car from a dead stop.

Dumbass: well yea but then you hit me

Officer: sir solid white lines mean you cannot change lanes, also did you need to make sure the lane you were changing was safe and clear?

Dumbass: I didn’t look but I put my turn signal on and he should have seen my turn signal as I pulled in front of him.

Me and the cop just stared at this dude. He was issued multiple tickets and couldn’t understand why. He also worked for a dealership and was driving one of their cars so they covered everything but man there are some dumb people out there

16

u/DerPuhctek 9d ago

Holy shit, Dumbass should have is driver license removed just for that turn signal comment...

11

u/gigibuffoon 9d ago

There's way too many people on the road that shouldn't even have gotten a license in the first place

That guy went across 6 lanes (presumably from the other side) get where he was trying to go. According to the address provided, there was a crosswalk about 2 minutes walking back in the other direction. This is a terrifying move in a CAR, which always freaks me out when seeing people do this. Insane. Sad. Preventable.

I never pass stopped vehicles at speed for this reason. Especially on the right. Still not pickup's fault.

107

u/revengejr 9d ago

What I want to know is would the driver of the black pick-up be considered at fault here? The guy basically ran in to oncoming traffic without looking and the driver who took the dash cam video seems to be in a larger vehicle so it's unlikely the driver of the black pick could have seen him crossing. Totally preventable and just terrible for all involved.

262

u/ProbablyDrunk303 9d ago

No. This was easily preventable if the dumby who ran across here just used a crosswalk. Also, he should have looked right when he was in front of the car with the dashcam. Easily preventable if he used common sense.

→ More replies

121

u/the_elephant_stan 9d ago

Not a lawyer but I'd say that the driver of the black pick-up is in no way at fault here. If it was determined he was speeding, he may share some of the liability as it could be argued that a slower speed would have resulted in less injury for the jaywalker.

I totally hit a lady like 15 years ago but not that hard. I was just coming from a red light through the intersection and she darted out between two rows of cars. I was going about 20 mph. Broke HARD, but hit her and she was up on the hood and flew back. Her shoes flew off and everything. She didn’t want to report and because she knew she was at fault. I called the police and reported what happened but they didn’t do anything since she didn’t report it and no ambulance was called. She actually wasn’t really hurt, from the outside. But I always anticipate someone now when I approach a line of cars….

Ah, yes, the wonderful invention of stroads. It's not a road or a street but it sure as hell keeps everyone not driving a car away from the city centers. Just like Jesus would have wanted. He drove a Pius by the way.. I mean, by the stroad of course....
