My dad grew up poor, and told me that he would heat up the baked potatoes and keep them in his pocket for warmth. Once it was cold, he ate it. Warms ya twice, as he would say.

373

u/Scipio11 8d ago

I've also heard of giving kids hardboiled eggs for the walk to school. Keeps them warm and saves time in the morning not eating at home.

248

u/Memeboidad3 8d ago

I get that it’s practical and frugal but holy shit I would be pissed if my parents made me walk to school with a hot hard boiled egg and told me to eat it for warmth

102

u/SlickHand 8d ago

Gotta eat that hard boiled egg barefoot on the way to school, in the rainy snow mud, going uphill both to and from school, all blistered up from the summer sun, sucking on rocks to produce saliva because you didn't have anything to drink and standing in fresh cow shit to warm your cold toes.

35

The alternative is walking to school without a nice warm egg. I know which one I’d pick

5

u/Mortress_ 8d ago

I think you would hold it for warmth and eat it when it cooled enough

14

u/im0b 8d ago

Id love it! With the shell on its very pleasant to hold and roll against your skin 🥰

3

u/greyjungle 7d ago

Why is this so funny? Holy crap, the mental image of a kid going to school, pissed off because the hot eggs. I got the giggles.

My Dad was poorer than yours. He ate them raw. Apparently he taught me to, also but at some point I just stopped. When I remembered it years later he said, "Times were hard."

Back in the 50's, my husbands mom would walk to school in Detroit with two baked potatoes in her pockets.

678

u/Dab2TheFuture 8d ago edited 8d ago

Now, to take the ferry cost one potato. And in those days, you didn't go on the ferry alone, and want to bring a friend with you on the long ride. ‘Got me two spuds me an' my bud,’ you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh yeah, Detroit...

232

u/Various_Froyo9860 8d ago

They didn't have red 'tatoes cause of the war. All you could get were those big brown ones. Back in diggity diggity do. You couldn't say 20 back then cause the Tick Tocks ruined it.

118

u/Dekkeer 8d ago

Give me five Ticks for a Tock you’d say. Now where were we? Oh yeah! The important thing was I had a 'tatoe on my belt, which was the style at the time.

Her husband’s stepmother would also be her mother-in-law. It doesn’t hurt anyone to specify relationships. Redditors love being clever with this stuff without thinking about the possibilities that complicate family. “My daughters’ cousins” “You mean your nieces and nephews lol” No, the children of my daughters’ stepfather’s sister are definitely not my nieces and nephews - I’ve never even met them - but their stepfather’s sister’s children - who they see several times a year and are very close to - are definitely their cousins.

can someone explain the pictures here. is one of them horizontally flipped? what the hell is going on

29

u/hexagonincircuit1594 8d ago

Yes, selfie photos are typically horizontally flipped. Probably the first photo was taken in normal mode, and the right one was taken in selfie mode. So we can expect the righthand photo is flipped.

25

u/hexagonincircuit1594 8d ago

In case anyone's curious, the reason for why selfies are often flipped is that people find it disconcerting to see themselves differently from how they look in the mirror.

"According to the mere-exposure hypothesis, people prefer what they see and encounter most often. In terms of self-perception, this means that people prefer their mirror images to their true images, which are what other people see. Experiments conducted at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1977 support this idea: When presented with photos of their true image and their mirror image, participants preferred their mirror image while friends and romantic partners preferred their true image."
