I think Adult Swim thinks he's guilty, because that's a cold way to announce this.

u/Final_Taco 8d ago
White text on black background was the iconic branding of the Adult Swim "Bumps" back after they got rid of the "All kids out of the pool" spots. It's been over a decade since i've had cable so I'm not sure if they still use them.

I will say that it fits their style. They announce all sorts of things with this white text on black background in a few short sentences.

u/DiggyMcGriz 8d ago
Or they know there’s more coming down the pipeline than just the domestic abuse thing.
Like most of the articles are omitting a pile of teenager grooming accusations that are cropping up.
125
u/WayneJetSkii 8d ago
Strongly disagree. Adult Swim thinks Roland is toxic & might make it so they can't print money from Rick & Morty stuff. If I was accused of very troubling criminal charges I would assume my current employer would cut ties with me. & then later if I am found not guilty, they could hire me back.
I would try to separate the toxic creator person (that is accused of illegal activity), from my golden intellectual property that is a cash cow. AFAIK, they are not really risking anything by separating from Roland. They risk a lot more if they stood by Roland up until (if*) he is found guilty.

I wish the world actually worked like this, we have Roman Polanski having raped a 13 year old and he's still backed by Hollywood. More people get away with this than not.

I work in the finance industry. I worked for a couple of brokerage firms and they wait for the conviction but we aren't in the public eye. Adult swim didn't want the backlash for keeping him on. It does seem more and more animators are toxic

Whether they do or don't think he's guilty, they are going to treat him like he's radioactive, cause he is.
Even if he's found not guilty, this kind of reputational damage doesn't disappear, and attaching that name to your biggest animated series is a real bad look for them.
It doesn't really matter what happened, and it doesn't really matter what they think happened. The story is out there, the audience has drawn conclusions, so the reputation damage has already happened. It could get worse if he's found guilty, but if he's found not guilty it only might get slightly better (for those who kept up with the case and are already amenable to listening to his side).
If he got a NG verdict, he would have to go the Jonny Depp route and try to restore his reputation by turning these DV accusations into a defamation case. But even still, very few people are looking at Depp the same way before that trial as after.

In a show where an infinite version of Ricks and Morty’s exist and the main character has ’died’ and then been reborn, aged up and injected with his current memories all in mere seconds, it seems like they could totally get away with a new voice actor every single episode.

I'm for this idea in theory, but I also did not really enjoy Tracy Morgan as Earlie Cuyler.
Like, the dude who previously voiced him obviously needed to be kicked to the curb, but there's no denying that dude's voice + the writing and character design worked in a way that doesn't when the voice is changed.

Lmao it’s like they planned it this way. Rick and morty has so many plot portals (as opposed to plot holes) and 4th wall breaks that they could just outright say the voice actor was accused of domestic abuse and it would somehow still fit the show.
The show is built on the idea that nothing has rules or makes sense, so you can’t really break rules that don’t exist.
Edit: glad I was able to comment before the post got locked.

That would actually be great. Guest voice actors for the rest of the run.
Celebrity guest voices doing their best Rick voice (as terrible as many of them will be), and then a few random cues or lines to give away who the voice actor is. Not too on the nose, just a subtle nod.
Edit:
Some examples to show how great this would be (think about Rick in their voice)
- Tracey Morgan
- Danny Devito
- Sam Eliot
- Sir Patrick Stewart
- Dame Judi Dench

He was apparently a dick to his ex GF (she was in a lot of his skits) when she had a very dangerous miscarriage.
That whole deal is a mess. A bunch of he said/she said, and both of them look worse off for it. She said that he wouldn't go to couples therapy, he showed texts that proved he was fine and that she could pick out the therapist, etc etc.
It was something that should've been done in private, but they aired it out for all to see.

There’s some clips in YouTube. I remember him talking about being abused as a child and people not really sure if he’s joking or not. He was way too drunk and kind of letting it all out. It got messy.
510
u/traumatized_shark 8d ago
He reveals that as 6 year old, he was sexually assaulted by his 13 year old "hot" cousin.
He sets up the story saying he promises the audience will think it's funny and that he's never told anyone this.
He explains that the following day he tells his father who doesn't believe him.
The whole clip is pretty fucking disturbing as the entire audience erupts with laughter as he's telling this story.

I think that influence on him is a lot more apparent in the Rick and Morty Pilot and also the bushtown interpretation.
With high quality production, an entire crew with various creative influences behind him, and the existing tv tropes of the “loveable asshole,” it all comes off as vaguely endearing or tragic depending on the episode.
But they’re not even subtle about the fact that the core of the show is about a deeply abusive relationship and emotional trauma.
115
u/Surfing_Ninjas 8d ago
He's definitely an alcoholic, they recorded a line reading session and he keeps drinking even though you can tell the rest of the crew tells him it's a bad idea.

I was on Harmontown (around the 1hr5min mark) when they came to Montreal for Just for Laughs and it was… an experience, lol.

The vibe I got from his Instagram was a man-child who literally never gets tired of making overly immature/potty humor jokes, and who yeah is maybe not fitting into the place they are in life. Not good signs for someone with so much going for him. And all this horrible behavior fits right into that
→ More replies7
u/Kraz_I 8d ago
I mean, that was both the annoying thing about him but also his whole appeal. A guy who is simultaneously an immature man-child but also really smart and creative. Looking at some of his earlier work, he's creative sure, but he absolutely needs someone to edit his stuff and tell him when he's got a bad idea, because he's got no filter. I lost interest in Rick and Morty in season 4, and the first seasons are probably so good because he had exactly enough input in the writing without getting the final say. I doubt anyone Dan Harmon brings on will make me want to start watching again.
That plus the heavy drinking and the common knowledge that he suffered from depression and mental illness, I was worried that he'd be a danger to himself and we'd hear that he'd caused a drunk driving accident or had a suicide attempt.
I definitely didn't expect domestic battery though.

u/buttsecks514 8d ago

132
u/CabinThinker 8d ago
I’ve really enjoyed a lot of Dan Harmon’s work, but wasn’t he embroiled in a controversy related to how he treated a woman he worked with? And now he’s encouraging this really out of control work environment and we are also learning Roiland maybe has issues in his relationships with women?
Not super encouraging stuff.

The case was sealed from the public up until January 13th 2023. So unless Roiland walked into Adult Swim and told on himself I'm not sure how they would be expected to know prior to the case being made public. Courts don't randomly inform your employer you're being charged, and guy doesn't work a 9-5 where suddenly missing days for appearances would be noticed.

As a non English speaker what does adult swim means?
383
u/Sneaky_Bones 8d ago
Adult Swim was a segment on Cartoon Network named after a cultural phenomena at public pools where there are either time periods or an entire day where children are barred from the pool so that adults can swim in peace. Adult Swim caters to adult-themed cartoons and comedy shows and later became its own channel

.... When did Adult Swim become it's own channel? Last time I saw, it was still part of Cartoon Network's channel, running at night (unless something changed)
→ More replies15
u/Owyn_Merrilin 8d ago
It's not, but there's this weird pretend thing internally where they're different "networks" sharing a channel, even though it's really just the night shift and day shift, they all report to the same boss, and both have ended up airing shows either originally pitched for or originally shown on the other one, with at least one Cartoon Network show actually getting an Adult Swim only wrap-up season.
Despite this, some people online get really insistent about them being really and truly separate for some bizarre reason.
4
u/gaussian23 8d ago
I've had them as separate channels running 24 hours for while now. Granted, it's repeating blocks rather than 24 hours of programming but it's nice to run AS in the background during the day

"Adult Swim" is the name of a time block [late at night] when Cartoon Network airs cartoons that appeal to an older, adult audience. They contain situations, jokes, and references that children wouldn't get - and we don't want to explain :)
They also give lots of airtime to new shows trying to get recognized. Most fail, but every now and then one becomes popular, eventually moves to a dedicated time slot, or even to another network.
38
u/Potemkin_Jedi 8d ago
I got you. In this context, it’s the trademarked name of a programming section of the Cartoon Network television channel (owned by HBO/Warner); this section airs Roiland’s signature product (a show called Rick and Morty). Historically, the term adult swim comes from the twentieth century when public/community swimming pools were common around the US. At these pools were mostly children, so certain times of day were slotted for a child-free swimming experience (an adult swim). The two tie together in that the programming block was meant for adults but aired on an otherwise child-friendly network.
→ More replies9
u/RyoCore 8d ago
As in reference to the article or where the phrase comes from?
Adult Swim is the name of the television channel Rick & Morty airs on. The phrase "Adult Swim" comes from the policy many public swimming pools have (or had when I was growing up?): No kids are allowed in the pool for that period of time, only adults, because kids tend to be pretty wild. Which the network adopted to basically emphasize the cartoons they show aren't really for little kids.
→ More replies16

It's also a reference to community pools. At some point in the day a lifeguard or attendant will announce it's time for "adult swim," which is when kids have to get out of the pool so the parents can enjoy it without the mayhem. It's where they got the name (although I don't know if it's still a common practice).

Night time / adult oriented part of the Warner Brothers owned Cartoon Network, and this is where Rick & Morty airs on the US.
