In Space films, the lights inside a space persons helmet are only there so we can see the actor, in real life the lights would make it very hard to see anything particularly in the dark, which space mainly is.

Because when you're in the way, it's very hard to see.
No seriously, you're blocking the view.

Where is this a shitty movie detail? It's just a movie detail

u/pocketchange2247 Mar 29 '23
He's going meta. This is a shitty shittymoviedetail because it's a real moviedetail

u/TheSadisticDragon Mar 29 '23
So what's the downside?
Edit: Nevermind everyone, I looked in the mirror and can now see the downside.

But the picture isn't from a movie it's from a TV show
10
u/PikesHair Mar 29 '23
The "movie" part is more of a suggestion than a rule, like speed limits or underage drinking.
1
u/MakeAByte Mar 30 '23
Maybe it's a shitty detail found in movies in that it's not a detail, just unrealistic?

To add to this. Most breathing apparatuses have nasal cups to keep the lenses from fogging up. However in movies this makes it so you can’t see the actor/actress talking so they are usually removed. Always disappointing.
3
u/AFlockofLizards Mar 30 '23
I made a few full face masks for a low budget short film a few years back. Not only does it keep the lens from fogging, but it also directs all of your breath output outwards. Without the nasal cup, your breath fills the mask and you start rebreathing your own exhalations, and not fresh air, and actors start getting dizzy from lack of oxygen. Same reason those full face snorkel masks got redesigned to have a cup.

As I sit here watching BSG right this very moment, I wonder just how good this algorithm really is...
PS
Cara Thrace is the best on-screen depiction of Achilles. Change my mind.

u/squeezyyoghurtpouch Mar 29 '23
she's meant to be Achilles?
35
u/Shankar_0 Mar 29 '23
It's an obvious parable.
She's the best warrior that's ever lived
She goes on an epic quest to save all mankind
While flawless at what she does, she's deeply flawed on a personal level. She's arrogant, abrasive, an in general kind of hard to be friends with.
Given the mythological connections woven throughout the show, she's the obvious Achilles.

mb I have no media literacy 💀 that does make sense tho thanks

No worries. The illiad is a great story once you get past the archaic language. It's worth reading a modern interpretation.
Steven Fry made a fun series of books about ancient mythology. One is titled Troy. It's a fun read with some light humor built in. He also narrates the audio book and it's delightful.

I recommend the "War Nerd Iliad".

Achilles dies to an arrow in his foot. Starbuck dies and comes back and leads her people to the promise land. Tbh if anything she’s half space Moses half space Jesus.
1
u/mackattacktheyak Mar 30 '23
Eh, not sure I see that. All of those are pretty common tropes at this point. And Achilles didn’t go on a quest to save humanity.
1
u/Shankar_0 Mar 30 '23
The quest part was a stretch. Probably should have just left it.
She's not the leader of the fight, but she's certainly the point guard/QB on the team. Consider her in tactical control of whatever fight she's in. She's the ringer that you send in when shit's getting real.

In some space media like StarCraft it's glow from the HUD inside the helmet, which I can just about believe
13
u/rhapsodyindrew Mar 29 '23
Correction, the lights are there so we can see Katee Sackhoff specifically, they just happen to also use the same helmets for other, lesser actors for cost saving reasons.

Remember when they gender-swapped Starbuck and she was awesome and there was relatively little screaming and crying?

Good characters are good characters. I loved Carrie Ann Moss as Jeri in Jessica Jones, for example.
The only time its annoying is if the creators clearly don't actually care about the character, e.g. HBO's Velma. Even then the problem isn't necessarily the characters themselves being different but the show/movie as a whole.

I always thought it would be counterproductive to have internal helmet lights. Now i feel like an idiot for thinking they were even pretending to be practical
2
u/netflix_n_knit Mar 30 '23
Well in this particular scene it’s really good she has it because she’s about to get turned into space debris until she turns on that light and they see it’s just Bo Katan, back to show them the way.

Space is mostly sunny. It is really hard to find shade in space. It’s true at least until you get very far from a sun.
3
u/ht9ehtooM Mar 29 '23
Incorrect, space is technically not dark.
3
u/Simple_Dragonfruit73 Mar 29 '23
Space is only illuminated by stars, without those space would be an empty void of darkness
2
u/ht9ehtooM Mar 29 '23
Some of space would be quite bright if there were anything for the light to reflect off of, is what I mean.
2
u/Simple_Dragonfruit73 Mar 29 '23
Maybe space is more complex and complicated than us two redditors are able to understand 🤣
2
u/ht9ehtooM Mar 29 '23
Yeah, well, probably. Anyway happy cake day.

Thank you stranger. It's probably time to delete this account and start again
1
u/ht9ehtooM Mar 29 '23
Why do people do that?
8
u/Simple_Dragonfruit73 Mar 29 '23
Just cause over time you drop small things about yourself. Your favorite eating spots, hobbies, pictures of pets/your home/your commute, whatever.
Anyways, I met a guy while playing New World when it released. He worked for the US government and as a hobby he was part of this community of people that would look for missing persons. Guy was insanely good at learning identities of people from online personal.
So out of curiosity I told him to try and find out who I am. All he had was my in-game username. It was the same as my reddit account.
He found my github, which led to my Twitter and Facebook. He found my LinkedIn, and within 15 minutes he told me my mother and father's address (they're divorced, he found both addresses). He mentioned my work history, education, my best friends. The only thing he couldn't find was where I currently live, but he knew what city I was in.
He wasn't even using any special software that scrapes the web, just Google and 30 minutes of his time. Soooo... yeah. This account is a year old now. Probably time to nuke it and start over

u/ht9ehtooM Mar 29 '23
That's a midly terrifying story. Anyway, you do you.
5
u/Simple_Dragonfruit73 Mar 29 '23
He actually found some old photos of me that I had been wanting to find so he helped me out a little too

gotta be like that I_RAPE_CATS guy, his username is so awful it prevents him from reusing it.

u/Simple_Dragonfruit73 Mar 30 '23
I never said it wasn't on me lol, but you'll never know my REAL username 😈

That style of facemask also needs a ventilation outflow opposite the inflow behind the head.
1
u/derekschroer Mar 29 '23
yeah, TVTropes taught me this, and every time I see it I get angry.
2
u/Stevenwave Mar 29 '23
Wouldn't let it anger you. It's just a Hollywoodism. Like those pew pew suppressed guns.
1
u/Lord_Ravior Mar 29 '23
Did people not know this already? Judging by the comments it seems like “wow you would not be able to see anything with all that light in your face” wasn’t everyone’s first thought?
